USING SABCA’S DATA

At the completion of SABCA in March 2011, the entire database of butterfly distributions will be handed over to SANBI. SANBI will be making this data publicly accessible via their data portal (http://sibis.sanbi.org), based on their Ecologically Sensitive data policy to protect sensitive data (e.g. endangered species) and based on any extra conditions stipulated by data owners in the data sharing agreements.

Until then, the only data or information that you may use is that accessed via SABCA’s Virtual Museum website. The following are the acknowledgement formats to be used, depending on the type of data/information you are wanting to make use of:

Virtual Museum photos:
“Photo(s) obtained from the Virtual Museum of the Southern African Butterfly Conservation Assessment (SABCA) (http://sabca.adu.org.za/vm_redirect.php), photo credit: [name of person who submitted the photo]”

Any maps or information accessed via SABCA’s virtual museum:
“Biodiversity data provided by: Data contributors to the Southern African Butterfly Conservation Assessment (SABCA) (list of contributors accessible here: http://sabca.adu.org.za/thanks.php), a joint project of the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the Animal Demography Unit, University of Cape Town, and the Lepidopterists' Society of Africa (accessed via SABCA’s online virtual museum, http://sabca.adu.org.za/vm_redirect.php, DD-MM-YYYY).”
